Moles medically known as Melanocytic Nevi are one thing that is common for all humans and are formed due to the collection of pigmented cells (melanocytes) in the dermis. Moles can appear anywhere on the body and in fact considered as beauty spots by many especially on face. Adult skin may have anywhere between 10-40 moles which is normal. They are usually brown or black in colour but sometimes can be skin coloured too. At the start moles are flat but with increasing age they can become raised or may not change at all. Types Of Moles
Skin moles vary in size, color, and appearance. Understanding different types helps
identify benign moles and recognize any changes requiring medical evaluation.
Compound Melanocytic Nevus
These moles are raised dark brown or black outgrowths and can also have hair emerging from it.
Acquired Melanocytic Nevi
These Moles appear after 1 year until adulthood. They are usually benign but rarely can show precancerous changes.
Junctional Melanocytic Nevus
These are small flat moles dark brown or black in colour and occur due to accumulation of melanocytes at the junction of epidermis and dermis
Intradermal Nevus
These are benign skin colour moles and can be present at birth or develop at a later age.
Giant Melanocytic Nevus
These are very big black moles covering large area of the body and are present at birth.
Congenital Melanocytic Nevi
Moles that appear at birth or within 6 months of life are termed congenital melanocytic nevi.

Moles can be removed for aesthetic reasons or when they start developing any signs of abnormal growth. There are various methods for removing the moles. Depending on the size of the mole either a surgical or a nonsurgical method can be advised by the dermatologist. Following are the treatment options for mole removal.
1)Punch excision—Raised moles are best removed by punch excision.In this method Mole can be completely removed under local anesthesia and the wound closed by a tiny suture.It may leave a tiny scar and the possibility of the scar would be discussed with you during consultation.
2)Q Switched laser treatment for moles-Flat moles can be removed by laser treatment. Number of sessions may vary from 2-8 depending on the intensity of the pigment. Laser mole removal treatment has gained popularity as it doesn’t leave a scar.
3)Radiofrequency treatment-Radiofrequency treatment for moles is used to excise the mole and can be used in small moles.
Considering that the mole has a genetic tendency it is not possible to stop. Sun protection can reduce them from turning black and can reduce the tendency to develop moles especially in fair complexioned individuals.
In Indian Skin usually Moles are not a cause of concern. When they develop certain signs like itching, abnormal increase in size, change in colour speak to your Dermatologist.
